Uma Dhupelia-Mesthrie is a Professor of History at the University of the Western Cape working on a history of Phoenix Settlement founded by Gandhi in 1904. Alan Paton was a trustee of the settlement for about two decades and she visited the Alan Paton Centre on 12 June 2019, to consult his papers as well as other liberal figures of the time to understand the politics of the 1950s through to the 1980s. She consulted PC1 the Alan Paton Collection to conduct her research.
